Getting a pokemon to listen was a miracle of man itself, Kouji had spent many a seconds thinking about why a creature so much more powerful would even give them a quarter of a thought. But then again, there were times that he wished that they listened to someone far weaker than they were; especially in a moment such as right now as he chased after his pokemon.

Deino was not his own pokemon, it was one his father had gifted him, and at the same time while that was true for others, this one had a tendency to not listen. Just part way through meal time it had taken to running away, and charging away into the distance. Jumping through the woods, getting scraped and scratched by the various branches that stood in his way. The evergreen shrubbery would end up being ever-red.

But just as he thought that he might have heard a series of voices, he felt Deino charge its way through a tree headfirst, it’s aggressive nature that sought destruction once more forced him to dodge the falling tree and dive into the clearing that his pokemon already stood in. ”Hey wait up, you damn.” He growled out but was met with a growl in return as his pokemon turned to face him, and headbutt him only for him to barely move out of the way.

Yet it charged his way towards him again, and he had to dodge once more only for him to continue barrel towards the group in the clearing…

in a reclusive area outside rustboro city, jayden had gathered several new recruits in one of the bunkers covered by OPERATION LOCKBOX. while it was not ideal to conduct training in such an environment, there was no real replacement for testing out the outcome for he and Felix Gallagher's initiative.

[break][break] "stand to attention!"

[break][break] luckily, there was a barrier across the entrance, protected by his DUSCLOPS and the shimmer of PROTECT that lent over the space, making it both invisible to outsiders as well as being soundproof.

[break][break] one by one, he swept a critical gaze over all the recruits. he razed them with various elements with his trio of lunatone. first, a rock slide that they were meant to dodge, followed by a grass knot meant to trip them up, and completed by a MOONBLAST. each of them defended adequately - well, adequately enough.

[break][break] when all was said and done, jayden dismissed them with wave of his hand for a break. as he did so, however, there was a sudden CRASH. jayden went on high alert, a sharp whistle commanding his recruits to hide as he walked over to the source of the sound. the entrance to the bunker.

[break][break] he voice echoed across the invisible space, not yet willing to reveal his position.

Kouji couldn’t really believe that Deino had tried to attack him, it wasn’t a soft little nudge either, but at the same time he was aware this creature could drop him if it ever really put some thought into it. What a strange thought, but not one he was comfortable with; he brushed off his grey hoodie and adjusted his cap somewhat as he heard a voice; his Deino facing him again. ”Alright, that’s enough there boy.” He said as he took out his pokeball, and threw it back in, the red light drawing it in, and the ball vibrating in his hands as he held it clenched.

But it’d take a little while before the little Deino could come out again. Still, that meant dealing with the problem ahead of him. He looked around, his eyes scanning in the area, but not seeing anyone. He gritted his teeth, he hated being on the backfoot, but at the same time. ”Koushi, Koushi Matsubara. Who's asking?”

”Where I’m from, it’s polite to introduce yourself first if you’re asking someone what’s up with them.” He put his hands into his pockets, and leaned back ever so slightly, as if puffing out his chest. It was a peacock-like display, to show he was tough, the only real language this guy knew.

[break][break] The door to the bunker creaked open, revealing the Rocket Admin standing at it's threshold. Two glowing eyes appeared behind him at the same time, gradually taking the form of his faithful Chandelure.

Kouji found his words stopping in a moment.

Anything else came to a halt, his mind didn’t seem to move in the way he wanted to, there was no special words to give out. For a moment he thought perhaps it might have been one of his lost siblings, but that went away the moment in which he looked at the person who was behind the door.

That hope died, it was someone he hadn’t met before, hadn’t talked to before, could not remember.

”Aye, that’s my pops. The guy’s had better days, but if you know his name, then…No, who the hell are ya?” He said as he walked forward, towards the door of the bunker, his eyes went to the Chandelure and then back to Jayden.

Shuji Matsubara. A loyal Rocket grunt, who Jayden had only met once before when he was a kid. However, like any other Rocket that Jayden had met and been mentored by, there was a sort of affection associated with the memory.

[break][break] "Jayden Cross," he said, offering a hand to the other. "The son of Nikolai Cross."

[break][break] There was a chance that Kouji Matsubara might have even heard of them, depending on how he was closely connected to Kanto Rocket. The organization had sunk it's thorns deep into the Cross family crest.

”Wait…” Kouji had been around, smuggling, doing the work with his father back in those days, that was a name he recognized, that was a person he’d recognized, even if he couldn’t match a face to it.

In another situation, Jayden may have gone with an alibi. However, in the current time and situation, he didn't see a need for one; he knew this boy's father, and there wasn't civilization around for at least several yards.

[break][break] More importantly, he knew how to seize on an opportunity once one had presented itself in front of him.

[break][break] Jayden nodded.

[break][break] "Come on in."

[break][break] The Admin led the other deeper into the bunker, making sure to firmly slide the door shut and lock it once the other had entered. When they did, they would see stale light flicker above them as Jayden led the other deeper into the metallic chamber that had been re-purposed as one of their training facilities. For now, at least, until Rocket had decided what else to do with it.

Kouji followed Jayden in, his eyes didn’t wander as he kept his eyes on the back of the Rocket Admin, his eyebrow rose.

It was a strange feeling, he was so close to his goal, his dream, and yet the excitement wasn’t overflowing, he didn’t feel as if this was the end-line. Because as it stood, he wasn’t a part, and this was just the start. There was a chilling feeling to that, knowing that the goal he had sought, the place he had sought for so long…

Was a mere step away.

”Kouji Matsubara…” What was his reason? He didn’t know, he couldn’t really put it into words that weren’t…Hammy? Overdone? Sounded like propaganda? So he just went with the first words that flew into his head.

as they step deeper into the bunker, his steps echoed softly against the cold, concrete floor. the air grew heavy with a sense of anticipation as he ventured deeper into the subterranean structure. the dim lighting cast elongated shadows along the walls, just as another set of doors opened leading into a large, mostly empty room.

[break][break] jayden arched his brow, though his face betrayed almost nothing. if you looked, there was a flicker of something akin to bemusement.

[break][break] "if you were born to join, then prove yourself."

[break][break] he whistled twice, and suddenly, another door opened up. two grunts came in and rushed through, aiming to barrel Kouji Matsubara to the floor.

Kouji heard him, nodded, and then turned.

His mind was fixed; it was a moment to prove himself, two grunts, rushing at him. He almost went to his beloved knife, but realized that killing his fellow rockets wouldn’t be appreciated. His legs slid forward, martial training since the age of five pumped through his muscles.

His left foot slipped on the outside of the front grunt’s foot, and then he slid that foot to the side; his arm went underneath the hand, his hip dropped, and then he charged his shoulder to the side to the now unbalanced grunt which fell into the other. He unhooked himself, turned on the foot, and then slammed it down on the first; on his diaphragm. He used that same movement to jump off him.

He was aware that being in the air was a weakness, any attack you made was easy to read, all attacks had large arcs; that was why; as he tucked in his legs, as he turned his hips, all of it was a simple feint. He kicked his legs out towards the floor, and attacked with a jab.

A jab was a mere jab.
[break][break]
It wasn’t a hard hit, the other man swung back at him, an overhead strike that was shot towards him; Kouji raised his arm, it was a solid strike that he felt to the bone. The man was bigger, and yet, he pushed with that same arm, hooking his right around the man’s left, he threw his own weight forward, he hooked his leg around that man’s own and then bucked his hip in order to throw him.

the grunts were quick, but Kouji Matsubara was quicker.

[break][break] jayden watched with a critical gaze as the young man brawled against the two other grunts. little did the other know it, but these two grunts were also rookies. jayden was testing them as much as he was testing the new potential recruit.

[break][break] unfortunately for them, however, Kouji Matsubara swept the floor with flying colors. in the aftermath of the fight, with the two grunts groaning on the floor, there wasn't much jayden could have said even if he'd wanted to.

[break][break] he did not smile, but there was a look of admiration in his gaze as he dawned upon the three. then a sharp whistle. "hold and rhodes. 20 suicide runs. right now. go."

[break][break] the two men groaned in defeat but needless to say, they pushed themselves off their feet and went sprinting in the appropriate direction. jayden let his gaze slide back over to kouji.

[break][break] he stepped towards him.

[break][break] "good job. you weren't rough - no more than you needed to be. how did you learn to fight?"
